List of Presidents of Nicaragua 2022 | Who Was First President Of Nicaragua – The President of Nicaragua, officially known as the President of the Republic of Nicaragua, is the head of state of Nicaragua and the head of government. The office was created in the Constitution of 1854. From 1825 to the Constitution of 1838, the head of the Nicaragua state was styled only as the head of state and as the supreme director from 1838 to 1854. Incumbent President, Daniel Ortega, has served as president since 2007. The term of the president was reduced to five years from 1985 to 1990, seven years from 1990 to 1997, and again to five years in 1997.

From 1990 to 2009, the president was barred from immediate re-election. A sitting president can run again after a wait of five years, but if successful he will have to step down for good at the end of his second, non-continuous term. However, in 2009, the Supreme Court ruled that the constitutional ban on immediate re-election was unenforceable. In 2014, the legislature amended the constitution to allow the president to run for an unlimited number of five-year terms.
